Freiburg, October 2018. About 40% of the energy consumption in German households is used by cooling appliances, dishwashers, washing machines and tumble dryers. Although the electricity consumption of new home appliances has dropped since the introduction of the EU energy label. There remains a large gap between the most efficient and average appliances.

Since 2001, the website www.spargeraete.de has been informing consumers about especially energy- and water-saving home appliances. In October 2018, the completely redesigned website was launched. The new website contains an illustrative catalogue of dishwashers, washing machines, tumble dryers, washer dryers, refrigerators and freezers. Also, it features a step-to-step selection guide to help consumers find the most efficient appliances currently available on the German market. In addition, it offers plenty of energy-saving tips that help consumers save energy at home.

The updated database currently includes over 10,000 products currently available on the German market. In addition to the energy/water consumption and the related costs over the lifetime of the appliances, the website also shows test results from Stiftung Warentest (a German consumer organisation recognised for its unbiased assessment) if available.

The website also offers valuable additional benefits. By using different filters, users can set precise search criteria and find products that exactly meet their specific needs. The search results are ordered by annual electricity consumption (from low to high) by default. However, the results can also be ordered by total lifetime costs, purchase price or capacity based on the users’ preferences.
